I miss the smell of turpentine...

Journal Entry: Sun Oct 12, 2008, 8:18 PM
Well, not really, but I miss the smell of my "all natural" imitation turpentine :) I've trying to get a hold of some OIL BARS for quite a while now and I finally found a place that sells them. And let me tell you, from the 10 minutes that I just spent playing with them... I'M IN LOVE! I so can't wait to actually "paint" again. I always liked traditional painting, but found oil painting a bit tedious and acrylic painting (for me) not as rich. And since I love to draw, these oil bars make painting just like drawing. I'm uber excited. Sorry for this random journal, but I wanted to share my happiness. That is all, time to sleep :D

BATGIRL CONTEST - DA WINNAS!!

Journal Entry: Mon Sep 8, 2008, 9:59 AM
Okay boys and girls, I'll hold you in suspense no longer. It's time to announce the winners of my Batgirl Lineart Coloring contest! And without further ado... I offer a special, special thanks to all the contestants, I really do appreciate you taking the time to share your vision, and this was truly one of the more difficult things I've had to do in a while (shows how hard my life is, right?)... and now really without anymore ado, the winners:

First: = ~RAEH So, really, when I saw this piece, I was almost positive it was gonna win. The "wow" factor is all over this piece. The color scheme, the blacks and the reds, are just perfectly executed, the skin looks like real skin, and the hair is handled with such care, I'm almost embarrassed to show my feeble attempt at it. The background is exciting, but not to the point that it pulls the focus from the character. And the dual light sources are just amazing and done smartly with your dominant light coming from the moon, and the subdued but equally appealing red light from the bottom right. Truly a wonderful rendition of Babs.

Second: = ~kalong Another great color scheme here (y'all know how I likes the colors) and not one that is overloaded with highlights everywhere. Subtlety is really the word to describe this great piece. And I LOVE how the hair looks, it looks like you can just grab on to it. The moody clouds perfectly compliment the drama of the blacked-out mask. And the hints of the city emerging from the clouds is nicely handled as well.

Third: = ~FieryArtist This rendition is by far the most original and creative of all the entries and deserves special acclaim because of it. While the blue isn't one hundred percent accurate, it is still executed with great style and technique that it's hard not to just keep staring at it and finding new little shapes and details.

Honorable Mention: = ~imDRUNKonTEA The mood in this piece is just great. I love the moon and the clouds in the background and the color application is really on point--subtle and effective.

Again, I want to thank all of you for your time and patience and while I wish you could all win, my pockets aren't that deep and my hands aren't that fast :D Also, if you disagree with my choices, that's perfectly fine, but please don't plaster this post or their images with negative comments. I know you guys are really cool and really supportive and would never do a thing like that, but this is for any knuckleheads who see this in passing and wanna start some drama. That said, thanks again, to the winners, congratulations, and you'll be getting a note from me shortly regarding your winnings.

Cheers!

BATGIRL CONTEST - IT'S A WRAP!!!

Journal Entry: Tue Sep 2, 2008, 8:54 AM
Wow! Is all I can say to you fine, fine individuals who took the time to color my little Batgirl piece! I am honored that you call cared so much to express your vision with my lines  :w00t: :#1:   :headbang:

And before I go on, please do yourself a favor and check out the fantastic entries: [link]

Now having said all that, there can only be 1 winner (and a 2nd place, etc.) i.e. the hard part: judging. I've decided to let the entries swirl around in my head for a minute before I make a decision. And while I do that, if anyone is interested you are more than welcome to make a case for your favorite piece(s). If you do this PLEASE NOTE ME because I don't want to have 30 replies about how this piece is so great and the artist gets their hopes up and doesn't win. I'm still reserving the right to make my own decisions (it's my contest, duh!) but perhaps some of you see something more that I may have missed.

Another note, I've changed up the prizes slightly. I realized that offering a color commission as a potential prize to a contest ABOUT coloring is kind of asinine :) so the new prizes will be as follows:

1st: 1 YR subscription or a free commission (or if you want, a color commission) + a free sketch commission
2nd: 3 MO subscription + a free sketch commission
3rd: a free sketch commission
Honorable Mention a hearty congratulations

That's it have fun and good luck to the potential winners!!!!

BATGIRL CONTEST + ENTRIES

Journal Entry: Mon Sep 1, 2008, 6:15 PM
BATGIRL CONTEST + ENTRIES

So me and my bro were talking the other day and he asked me if anyone has ever colored any of my lineart. I had to think for a moment, and realized that NO, no one has colored one of my images. But that's all about to change, friends (hopefully). So here's the deal: I'm holding a contest for all you colorists out there. Your mission, color my Batgirl piece! I have a version, that I colored which you can use for reference for the costume colors, but that's it. I don't want a bunch of copies of my thing, do your own thing, get nasty with it! The details are as follows:

Deadline:
September 1, 2008 @ 11:59 PM EST

Prizes:
1st = 1 YR subscription or 1 free color commission (check my 'Collabs' gallery for examples)
2nd = 3 MO subscription
Honorable Mention = a hearty congratulations :)

Also, 1st and 2nd will receive a free sketch commission of the character of their choice a la: [link] In addition, all entries will be :+fav:d and displayed in my journal for the duration of the contest. The winners will have a display in my journal for an as yet undetermined length of time.

When submitting, PLEASE NOTE ME with a link to your submission. And if any of you who don't have any previous coloring experience would like to enter, I have a collection of tutorials that might help you out [link] Okay, that's it. Any questions, leave them below. Happy coloring!!!
