I'm looking for some artists, preferably those who work traditionally, either here on dA or out in the interwebs, that are really pushing the envelope of art.  I want artists who aren't settling and who are challenging the status quo.  If you know of such an artist please let me know.  I'd be very interested in taking a look at their stuff, 'cause I wanna get inspired!  Thanks.

Just wanted to share with you the news that I've been waiting for a while to receive: I'm going back to school in the fall to get my Masters in Art Education!  Needless to say, I'm very excited for this new chapter in my life.  When I was in undergrad, I don't think I pushed myself as hard as I should have and I am really looking forward to getting another chance to prove my worth.  It's time to stop making excuses and time to start producing some really, really awesome artwork.  I can't wait!!

Well, it certainly has been a while since I posted anything, and for that I do apologize. I just wanted to let you all know that I am in full swing art mode trying to beef up my portfolio to go back to school this fall. Initially, I was going to wait to show you what I've been working on, but I decided that since I still have a couple months before my deadline I figured it might be beneficial to have some other eyes look at it before my final submission. I have a couple pieces done already, but I'll only be uploading them sporadically (I never liked art dumps) so please stay tuned. So, many of you may remember my little Kyle Baker rant that I attached to my Captain America piece from a couple months ago: [link] And while I stand by everything I said, I will admit that Mr. Baker can show flashes of brilliance every now and again. I recently picked up "King David" which was written (or rather adapted from the Bible) and illustrated by Mr. Baker, and I gotta say, it was pretty fantastic. If you've never read the bible, then let me be the first to tell you *spoiler alert* it's kinda dull (and oh so confusing). Now don't get me wrong, what happens in the bible is about as epic as it comes, but it's language is not for those who like clear, concise prose. The fascinating thing about "King David" is that Mr. Baker doesn't wholly abandon the source material, but uses it as a framework to, rather smartly, inject modern colloquialisms that make it quite a fun read. And as for the art, it was surprisingly good. It was handled with MUCH more care than his Captain America work. I won't go as far as to say that because Mr. Baker did the writing for this, that it was somehow more personal to him and thus more deserving of his attention (although it probably was) and that the Marvel job was just a check (although it probably was) but I was impressed. Go check it out if you get a chance.

So, yeah, I've been away for a bit, and I apologize. I've been trying to re-evaluate my life (again) and just haven't been really inspired to do anything art related. I have been doing a little bit here and there to help out a fellow dA-er (more on that later) and managed to produce a piece last weekend. I've been digging on a lot of traditional art lately, and it's making me question my digital exploits. However, I'm not yet going to completely give up on digital art-making; I have some ideas that will only make sense from a digital standpoint (as usual, more to come on that later). In other news, I've decided to go back to school and get my Masters in teaching. I'm really excited about that (not so excited about the GRE, but what are you gonna do). And lastly, I just want to thank all of you for your kind words a couple months ago, it really means a lot to me. Stay classy, dA

For clarification (and just so there is no confusion): I am merely making my feelings known about a particular artist who, on most occasions is a very talented artist, but has recently let me (and those with discerning taste) down. I'm sure many of you watch this artist as well, but no I'm not going to let you know who I'm talking about. But I will say that this artist is apart of the 1,000,000 pageview club (I don't believe this club actually exists, it's just what I call it). And so we are clear: when I say "shitty art" I mean art from individuals who have GENUINE talent, but choose (and it is a choice) to produce sub-par (read: shitty) work. And for the record, I'm not alone in my criticism, I've even seen correspondence with other "elite" artists who've criticized this artist's work. And of course, the artist claims it's because of deadlines and how fast he/she works. And please do not read this and think that I am claiming to be God's gift to art, and that everything I produce is the equivalent of pure gold. No, it is not. Not hardly. BUT I also do not call myself a professional. As I write this, and continue to think about my stance, I believe that my bigger complaint is with not only the people who drool over this shit, but the companies who willingly pay A LOT of money for this garbage, and TRUST it is garbage. Maybe I have high standards (I do). Maybe I'm hating (I am). Maybe I just want my "pros" to give me pro quality work (fuck yes, I do). And so should you!
