Something which first made me take notice of your work - all those years ago before we first became acquainted - was the unique eye with which you present your work. At the time, you were focused mainly on established characters who were known without being announced. Many of the pieces were single-character works, much like this entry. There are few things more iconic than Superman. Red and blue pretty much come to mind at the mere mention of the big lug. What appeals to me about this piece, and countless others in your gallery, is that you don't simply stick to the base colors. You pay homage to them, tweak them a tad here or there and shape them into your own Chavisized rendition. They remain just as iconic, mind you, but I think you also have created a style unique to who you are as an artist. You've made it clear that an icon doesn't have to be electric blue and fire engine red to still be Super. As with this piece, you've shown that there can be a greater depth and a broader sense of emotion just by toning down the colors. It works extremely well and flatters your co-collaborator's linework. It isn't the typical "strutting" pose of a flying superhero. There's a story to the very way she's drawn and you've expanded that story in your choice of colors, shades, tones and detail. Your highlight work remains as elegant as ever and, as is your way, you make the background just as beneficial as the main character. It's my personal opinion that your style which translates so well on known characters will make your own original work more recognizable. Great work, Stephen. Of course, I'm going to be a little stingy on the star ratings, only because I know how easily you can knock a piece out of the park & I don't want to see you become fat Elvis before you rock the face off the world.
